Burger Chef grew out of a flame-broiler equipment company and at its 1970s peak was one of the largest burger chains in the country, second only to McDonald's. It introduced the 'Works Bar' for self-serve toppings and, in 1973, the Fun Meal — a kids' combo with a toy that predated McDonald's Happy Meal. Sold to the parent of Hardee's in 1982, the Burger Chef name was gradually phased out, with the final locations converted by 1996.
