Sports Authority pioneered the big-box sporting-goods superstore, filling warehouse-sized floors with everything from treadmills and tents to team jerseys and bikes, and grew into the largest sporting-goods retailer in the country. It even bought the naming rights to the Denver Broncos' stadium. Saddled with debt from a private-equity buyout and undercut by Dick's, Walmart, and online sellers, Sports Authority filed for bankruptcy and liquidated its roughly 460 stores in 2016.
