The last Gimbels stores were closed and liquidated in 1987.

Founded by the Gimbel family, Gimbels grew into one of the largest department-store chains in the country, famous for its New York rivalry with neighbor Macy's — immortalized in 'Miracle on 34th Street.' Gimbels ran Philadelphia's Thanksgiving Day parade beginning in 1920 and operated the upscale Saks subsidiary for years. Unable to keep pace with changing retail, the chain shut down in 1987.
