Broken up and sold to CVS and Rite Aid in 2004–07, ending the Eckerd nameplate in the U.S.

Eckerd grew from a single drugstore into one of the largest pharmacy chains in the United States, a fixture across Florida, the South, and the Northeast known for its photo developing, pharmacy counter, and ubiquitous strip-mall stores. After passing through several corporate owners, the chain was carved up: J.C. Penney sold the drugstores, and by 2007 the Eckerd locations had been absorbed by CVS and Rite Aid, retiring the name.
