The last Bonwit Teller stores closed in 1990 after years of ownership changes and bankruptcy.

Bonwit Teller was a luxury specialty store known for high fashion, its violet-and-floral signature packaging, and a flagship on Fifth Avenue. The chain dressed generations of well-to-do shoppers and helped launch designer boutiques inside its stores. Its Fifth Avenue building was demolished in 1980 to make way for Trump Tower — a teardown that destroyed prized Art Deco reliefs — and after a string of owners and a bankruptcy, the remaining Bonwit Teller stores closed by 1990.
